In 1991, $737 million was spent by consumers and projections for 1992 spending is expected to be about $812 million. Flavoring in sports drinks needs to be palatable, yet be refreshing and allow the consumer to drink large quantities. Marketing strategy has placed less emphasis on targeting athletes, instead marketing the sports drinks as an occasional drink to non-athletes. The latest trend is toward nutritional beverages for athletes that offer athletes carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals.
